Reflection

When looking back through my blog posts I did see some aspects that were connected among all the posts.  Although each prompts for the blogs posts may be seemingly different, I have realized that many of the posts can be related to transaction costs in relation to decision making and efficiency.  For example in the Illinibucks post, Illinibucks were to be used in order to "skip the line", however the Illinibucks were of limited quantity to each student.  In this post, I essentially wrote about how the use of Illinibucks is an optional decision for students in order to make a transaction cost that would make certain situations more efficient.  However the efficiency could be different in different types of situations such as the use of IlliniBucks would make the situation more efficient just for the individual themselves or it could make the situation more socially efficient by letting those who are the most desperate in those situations use their Illinibucks to skip the line while those who are less desperate don't.  This is especially true since the IlliniBucks are limited for each student.

As for the post of Team Structure,  I was able to analyze the structure of a team that I was apart of and the impact that the team structure had on the overall dynamic of the team.  I wrote that the team structure was a mixture between the dual authority and the all-channel network models which is that the coaches had the high authority on the team while the team captains were second on the hierarchy. And all the other players would have to talk to the team captains and the team captains would relay this information to the coaches.  This decision to make the structure of the team like this made the team more efficient because it established the lines of communication among the team and made the team member much more likely to actually communicate the problems they were experiencing.

Although I have just recently realized and it has become more apparent to me that these blog posts are related to transaction costs in relation to decision making and efficiency, I believe it was the post about Organization and Transaction Cost that was supposed to make us begin to think in terms of these concepts.  In this post I was able to talk about my experience as an intern at a company and analyze the decision making of the company in order to understand the company's organizational structure and transaction cost and all these decisions making of the company were with the goal of making the company more efficient.

Overtime, I feel that my process for writing these posts has evolved somewhat.  In the beginning I was a really hesitant to write any post that included details that were really personal however, I found myself taking too much time when trying to write a post that did not include real experiences or only included very few real experiences so in the end I just wrote my real experiences.  However , now I am not really hesitant at all to write post that are based on my real life experiences.

As for future post, I believe that a prompt that asks, "has there ever been experience in which you had to personally take a loss of some kind in order to benefit the whole group."  I think that this prompt would make us reflect on a certain experience that would help us connect how we performed transaction costs in relation decision making and efficiency to our own lives.  And this could personal analysis could further affect our decisions in the future.

Comments

  1. Let me take up your last paragraph and the prompt you suggest on "taking one for the team." I wonder if you've thought the following through in consider that specific prompt. Does the person want to bring attention to himself or herself for having made this sacrifice? In other words, if at a job interview, would the person be comfortable bring up the episode with the interviewer? The other issue is, what should a student who doesn't have such an example do to write a reasonably good post. Might you modify the prompt to handle those issues?

Regarding the rest of your post, let me suggest that your attendance pattern in class (which I imperfectly sense is one out of the two sessions per week) may limit the way that you see connections between the ideas we are studying. So, for example, you mention Illinibucks and efficiency, you didn't try to connect the Illinibucks to transfer pricing, which was in the Excel homework? In fact, we did some analysis of this last Thursday in class. So that potential connection was missed.

I am glad you are more comfortable in writing the posts. I hope you can use that as an asset to explore the ideas more deeply. Connecting the economics to your experience is a needed way to do that.

  2. I did not initially take into consideration the questions you brought up in the first paragraph. And I realized that the prompt question I brought up may not be good for everyone to answer as some may not be willing to share. However for those that do not have an example like these I would possibly change the prompt to "write about your personal experience in groups. Do you generally enjoy working in groups and are there specific factors that make working in groups more enjoyable. Also, is there a specific role in the group you usually try to be?"
